Prof. dr. M.A.G.G. (Marc) Vooijs

I am full professor and chair of the department of Radiotherapy at Maastricht University and manager research and member of the daily advisory board of the Maastricht Radiation Oncology clinic (Maastro). And a program leader in the fundamental and translational Cancer Biology program at the GROW graduate school for Oncology at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) at Maastricht University. I studied Medical Biology at Radboud-UMC, did my PhD with Anton Berns at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) my postdoc with Rafi Kopan at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA and with Hans Clevers at the Hubrecht Institute in Utrecht. I started a group at UMC-Utrecht in the department of Pathology in 2006 with Elsken van de Wall and Paul van Diest. In 2010 I moved to Maastricht University to become head of the Radiotherapy laboratory. My team has a strong interest in tumor hypoxia and the NOTCH stem cell pathway as a therapeutic target. My multi-disciplinary research team has developed small animal micro-CT imaged guided radiotherapy to monitor novel combination treatments effects, normal and patient-derived organoids from various solid tumours as models for patient tailored precision treatments and have developed novel tumor-selective small molecule inhibitors against the NOTCH signaling pathway. My previous and current basic and translational research is funded by KWF, ERC grants among others. I am a member of the Marie Curie ITN network Theradnet (International NETwork for training and innovations in THErapeutic RADiation) a follow-up of the ITN network Radiate. I have over 100 peer-reviewed publications and am co-inventor on two patents. I’ve been promotor and co-promotor of more than 14 PhD students. And am also a board member of the Dutch society of Radiobiology (NVRB) and European Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ESTRO) and alumnus of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE).
