Prof. dr. ir. F.J.W. (Frank) Verhaegen

Research Staff
  • Head of Physics Research

Frank Verhaegen is head of the Physics Research Department of Maastro. He is also full professor at Maastricht University since 2009. He studied at the University of Ghent in Belgium, followed by postdoctoral studies at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, UK. He worked as Principal Scientist at the National Physical laboratories in London, UK. Before moving to Maastricht he held a position as Associate Professor in medical physics at McGill University, Montréal, Canada. His main interests are the combination of radiation physics and imaging as applied to radiotherapy and radiobiology. At Maastro, physics research focusses on radiotherapy physics and imaging in photon beams, but recently also on proton physics, since the opening of the proton therapy clinic. Besides medical physics applications, his group also works on advanced preclinical technology development for precision irradiation. He is also the editor of a book on Monte Carlo methods in radiotherapy.
